Albert Edward Carlton was born in Gazeley in 1893 (Newmarket Q1-1893 3B:436), baptised in Gazeley (All Saints) on 12th March 1893, son of Gabriel and Rachel CARLTON, (née COCKERTON).

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at the Village, Great Thurlow, with his father Gabriel CARLTON [39] butcher, born Weston Colville; his mother Rachel [34]; sisters Harriet D [6], Elsie Maud [5] and Winifred [9 months] and brother Victor G.[3]. Winifred was born in Gt Thurlow, but the others were born in Gazeley.

1911 census...Aged 18, a labourer, he was at Moulton Road, Gazeley with his parents; brother Victor, and sisters Elsie Maud and Winifred. Sister Harriet was a servant in Ashley.

His younger brother, Victor George died in France in October 1918 see here




He enlisted in Luton.
Dying of his wounds, and his Army records not being found, it cannot be stated where or when he was wounded. The Battalion had spent latter part of May and beginning of June near Albert, their left flank resting on the northern end of the Fricourt ridge and the right flank facing the ruins of La Boiselle.
The 36th Casualty Clearing Station was at Heilly from April 1916, joined in May by the 38th C.C.S.
